Purpose of Role
The purpose of the nurse or health personnel in the school is to promote students’ health, ensure a safe school environment, support learning and school attendance, provide health education and guidance, and serve as a link between the healthcare system, families, and the educational community to help students succeed academically and physically.

ISP/BSI Key Responsibilities
- Promote and maintain students’ health, support physical and mental well-being.
- Provide first aid and emergency care, respond to injuries and urgent medical situations.
- Manage chronic conditions and medications monitor students with ongoing health needs and safely administer medications.
- Ensure a safe and healthy school environment prevent accidents and promote hygiene.
- Monitor and prevent communicable diseases, control the spread of illnesses within the school.
- Provide health education and guidance, teach students about healthy habits and wellness.
- Support student attendance and learning, reduce health-related absences and help students stay in class.
- Serve as a liaison between students, families, healthcare providers, and the school community, coordinate care and communication.
- Manage medical supplies and inventory – keep track of medications, first aid materials, and medical equipment, ensuring everything is available, safe, and organized.
Skills, Qualifications and Experience
- Strong clinical and nursing skills (first aid, medication administration, chronic disease management)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to educate students and staff about health and wellness
- Critical thinking and problem-solving in emergency situations
- Organizational skills for managing records and medical inventory
- Empathy, patience, and the ability to work with diverse student populations
- Registered Health license or equivalent certification
- Bachelor’s degree related to health preferred
- CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Additional pediatric or school health certifications are a plus
- Prior experience in pediatric, community, or school nursing preferred
- Experience managing chronic illnesses and medications in children
- Experience with health education, wellness programs, and student advocacy.
- Familiarity with health record-keeping, school policies, and emergency response procedures.
